What Is Green Cleaning?
Everyone wants to have safer ways of cleaning. Most companies that produce cleaners have an environmentally safe initiative, but it’s often hard to tell what is the truth and what is just ‘Green wash’. In our opinion, the term “Green Cleaning” means:
- Environmentally responsible ingredients
- Tested and approved by the most astringent environmental organizations
- Products that contain no VOCs (volatile organic compounds)
- No toxic or harmful chemicals
“Green cleaning” is an oft misused term, but one that should be used to describe a growing trend in favour of using cleaning methods with environmentally-friendly ingredients and agents that have minimal or no impact on human health or the environment. Green cleaning techniques and products should avoid the use of chemically-reactive and toxic cleaning products which contain various toxic chemicals, some of which emit volatile organic compounds (VOCs) causing respiratory and dermatological problems among other adverse effects.
Companies that are “Green” are generally held to higher standards, in general, than federal or state-mandated “Green” cleaning rules. The purpose of ‘going green’ is to address human illnesses that arise from chemical exposure as well as damage to the environment (water, soil, air) from disposal of these products. The role chemical exposure has in creating allergic sensitivities, reducing immunity, mimicking hormones and contributing to cancer and other diseases, is a long-respected field of research in medicine. For example, research on human and animal exposure to formaldehyde (formalin), benzene and other solvents has resulted in legislation to limit exposure but has not completely banned these products.
